How Do Teams Qualify for the UEFA Conference League?

I explain how teams qualify for the UEFA Conference League through domestic competitions, UEFA's access list, the Main and Champions Paths, and transfers from Champions League and Europa League qualifying.

Teams can qualify for the UEFA Conference League through domestic competitions or by transferring into the competition after elimination from designated Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds.

There is no single league position that qualifies clubs across every European country. Instead, UEFA uses an access list based on association coefficients to determine how many Conference League places each national association receives and the qualifying round where those clubs begin.

The competition also has two qualifying routes: the Main Path and the Champions Path. For 2026/27, no club qualified directly for the Conference League league phase. All 36 participants reached it through qualifying routes.

In this guide, I will explain the different ways a club can qualify and why the route varies from one country to another.

What Are the Main Ways to Qualify for the Conference League?

A club can reach the Conference League through several routes:

  1. Domestic league position

  2. Domestic cup qualification

  3. Another UEFA-approved domestic competition in limited cases

  4. Conference League qualifying through the Main Path

  5. Conference League qualifying through the Champions Path

  6. Transfer from Champions League qualifying

  7. Transfer from Europa League qualifying

Which route applies depends on the club, its national association, and the stage where it enters UEFA competition.

Does a Specific League Position Always Qualify for the Conference League?

No. There is no universal rule such as: "Sixth place always qualifies for the Conference League." Qualification positions vary by association.

A club might qualify through fifth, sixth, or seventh place in one domestic league, while a team in another country may qualify through a completely different position.

The reason is UEFA's access list. It determines how many teams each association can enter and where those teams begin.

What Determines How Many Conference League Places a Country Gets?

UEFA uses the association coefficient ranking. That ranking is based on how clubs from each national association have performed in UEFA competitions over the relevant ranking period. The association's position helps determine:

  • how many clubs it can enter into UEFA competitions

  • which competitions those clubs enter

  • which qualifying round they enter

This is different from a club's individual UEFA coefficient. The association coefficient helps determine access, while the club coefficient is mainly used later for seeding and draw purposes.

How Many Conference League Teams Can an Association Enter?

The number varies according to UEFA's access list. Under the 2026/27 regulations, an association can have one, two or three designated Conference League representatives depending on its position and allocation.

Those places can come from domestic league standings, domestic cup qualification, or a combination of both. The exact domestic route is therefore not identical across UEFA's member associations.

Can Domestic Cup Winners Qualify for the Conference League?

Yes, depending on the association's UEFA allocation. In some countries, the domestic cup winner qualifies for the Europa League. In others, the access structure can place a cup winner in the Conference League.

UEFA's regulations allow Conference League representation to include domestic cup winners where the access list specifies it. So winning a domestic cup can provide a Conference League route, but it is not a universal rule across every association.

What Happens If the Domestic Cup Winner Qualifies for a Higher UEFA Competition?

The European places are reallocated according to UEFA's access rules. For example, if a cup winner also qualifies for the Champions League through its domestic league position, it does not occupy both places.

The Conference League access positions can then move among the next eligible clubs in that domestic championship. Entry rounds can also shift. This is why the final European qualification picture in a domestic league is sometimes different from the simple league table.

What If the Cup Winner Already Qualifies for the Conference League Through the League?

Again, UEFA reallocates the place. A club cannot occupy two Conference League qualification positions.

When the cup and league routes overlap, the access position normally passes through the domestic standings according to UEFA's rebalancing rules. This can result in another league club qualifying for Europe.

Can Another Domestic Competition Produce a Conference League Place?

In special circumstances, yes. UEFA regulations allow the winner of another official domestic competition to replace the lowest-ranking domestic league representative in the Conference League.

However, UEFA must approve that competition before the relevant season. This is an exception rather than the standard qualification route.

What Is the Conference League Main Path?

The Main Path is the main qualifying route for clubs that are not entering the competition through the Champions Path. It includes clubs qualifying through domestic league or cup allocations and clubs transferring from designated Europa League qualifying rounds.

The Main Path runs through:

  • first qualifying round

  • second qualifying round

  • third qualifying round

  • play-offs

Not every team starts in the first round. Some enter later according to the UEFA access list.

What Is the Conference League Champions Path?

The Champions Path is primarily for domestic champions that began their European campaign in Champions League qualifying but were eliminated. Instead of immediately leaving European competition, designated losing champions can continue through the Conference League Champions Path.

For the Conference League, that path begins in the second qualifying round. It continues through:

  • second qualifying round

  • third qualifying round

  • play-offs

The Champions Path remains separate from the Main Path during qualifying.

Can a Domestic Champion Qualify for the Conference League?

Yes. Winning a domestic league does not guarantee Champions League league-phase football. Champions from lower-ranked associations often begin in Champions League qualifying.

If they are eliminated at designated stages, UEFA's access system can move them into another competition. Some of those clubs eventually enter the Conference League Champions Path.

A domestic champion can therefore end up competing in the Conference League even though it originally entered Europe through the Champions League.

Can a Team Drop From the Champions League Into the Conference League?

Yes, during qualifying. One of the clearest routes is for clubs eliminated from the Champions League first qualifying round. They can move into the Conference League second qualifying round through the Champions Path, subject to the season's final adapted access list.

Other Champions League teams may reach the Conference League indirectly. For example, a club can first drop from Champions League qualifying into the Europa League and then enter the Conference League if it is eliminated again at the relevant stage. So a team's European qualifying route can involve more than one UEFA competition.

Can a Club Play in All Three UEFA Competitions in One Season?

During qualifying, yes. A club can theoretically move through:

  1. Champions League

  2. Europa League

  3. Conference League

This happens when UEFA's access rules transfer losing teams from one qualifying competition into another.

For example, a club can begin in Champions League qualifying, move into Europa League qualifying after elimination, and later enter the Conference League if it loses again at a stage that provides that route. Once the league phases begin, however, this movement stops.

Can Europa League Teams Drop Into the Conference League?

Yes, during qualifying. Designated Europa League qualifying losers enter corresponding Conference League rounds. For 2026/27, the routes included:

  • Europa League first qualifying round losers entering the Conference League second qualifying round

  • Europa League second qualifying round losers entering the Conference League third qualifying round

  • Europa League third qualifying round losers entering the Conference League play-offs

  • Europa League play-off losers entering the Conference League league phase

That final route is especially important because a club can reach the Conference League league phase without ever winning a Conference League qualifying tie.

How Did Europa League Play-Off Losers Qualify for the 2026/27 Conference League?

They qualified automatically for the Conference League league phase after losing their Europa League play-off ties. There were 12 Europa League play-off losers in 2026/27. All 12 entered the Conference League league phase. They joined the 24 winners of the Conference League play-offs to create the 36-team field.

How Many Teams Reached the 2026/27 League Phase Through Conference League Play-Offs?

  • There were 24 Conference League play-off winners.

  • The play-off round contained 48 teams competing in 24 ties.

  • The winners reached the league phase.

  • The losers were eliminated from Europe.

  • Those 24 winners were joined by the 12 Europa League play-off losers.

That produced:

  1. 24 Conference League play-off winners

  2. 12 Europa League play-off losers

  3. 36 league-phase teams

Were There Any Direct League-Phase Qualifiers in 2026/27?

No. This is one of the biggest differences between the Conference League and UEFA's other two major men's club competitions.

The 2026/27 Champions League and Europa League both had direct league-phase qualifiers. The Conference League did not. All 36 teams reached their league phase through the qualifying system.

Can a Club Qualify Directly From Its Domestic League to the Conference League League Phase?

Not in the 2026/27 access system. A domestic league position can qualify a club for the Conference League, but that club still enters at a qualifying stage or the play-offs according to the access list.

It must then progress through the required tie or ties before reaching the league phase. So there is an important difference between qualifying for the Conference League and qualifying directly for the Conference League league phase.

For 2026/27, domestic qualification provided entry into qualifying rather than direct league-phase access.

Do Clubs From Stronger Associations Enter Later?

Often, yes. UEFA's access list determines each club's starting round. Clubs from higher-ranked associations may enter at later stages, while clubs from lower-ranked associations may need to begin much earlier.

For example, some teams entered directly in the 2026/27 play-off round, while others had been competing since the first qualifying round in July. The exact distribution can change when UEFA rebalances the access list.

Why Does UEFA Rebalance the Access List?

Vacancies can appear for several reasons. For example:

  • a titleholder qualifies for a higher competition through its domestic league

  • a cup winner also qualifies through the league

  • a club receives a Champions League European Performance Spot

  • another qualification route becomes duplicated

UEFA then adjusts the qualifying access list. A club may be moved into a later round without its association receiving an entirely new European place. The purpose is to fill the available positions while maintaining the competition structure.

Does Winning the Conference League Qualify a Club for Next Season's Conference League?

Not normally. The Conference League winner receives a place in the following season's Europa League league phase. So the champion is rewarded by moving up to UEFA's second competition rather than being given an automatic Conference League title-defence place.

For example, the 2026/27 Conference League winner is guaranteed a place in the 2027/28 Europa League league phase if it has not already qualified for the Champions League or Europa League through domestic competition.

What If the Conference League Winner Qualifies for the Conference League Domestically?

Its titleholder route takes it into the Europa League rather than giving it another Conference League place.

Under UEFA's regulations, if the Conference League titleholder would otherwise qualify for the Conference League through domestic competition, its association's Conference League allocation is adjusted.

The resulting vacancy is then handled through UEFA's access-list rebalancing system. A club cannot occupy both the Europa League titleholder reward and a domestic Conference League place.

Can the Conference League Winner Qualify for the Champions League Instead?

Yes, if it earns Champions League qualification through its domestic competition. Winning the Conference League guarantees access to the following Europa League league phase, but it does not prevent the club from taking a higher domestic qualification route.

If the champion qualifies for the Champions League domestically, it enters the Champions League instead. UEFA then adjusts the lower competition allocations where necessary.

Is Club Coefficient Used to Decide Who Qualifies?

Not directly through domestic results. A high UEFA club coefficient does not give a club a Conference League place by itself. Qualification is based on domestic competition results and UEFA's access system. Club coefficient becomes more important for matters such as:

  • qualifying draw seeding

  • league-phase pot placement

So a club cannot miss every domestic European qualification position and then qualify merely because it has a strong historical coefficient.

Does Association Coefficient Affect Qualification?

Yes. This is where the distinction matters. The association coefficient helps determine how many European places an association receives and where those clubs enter UEFA competitions.

The club coefficient helps rank individual teams for seeding. So association performance influences access, while a club's own European history mainly influences how it is seeded once it enters.

Are Conference League Qualifying Matches Two-Legged?

Yes, under the normal format. Each tie is played:

  • once at one club's stadium

  • once at the other club's stadium

The aggregate score determines who advances. If the aggregate score is level after the second leg, extra time is played. If the teams remain level, the winner is decided by penalties.

The away-goals rule is not used. I will explain the full qualifying-round structure separately in How Do the Conference League Qualifying Rounds Work?

What Happens If a Team Loses in Conference League Qualifying?

It is eliminated from UEFA competition. There is no fourth UEFA men's club competition below the Conference League. That makes it different from Champions League and Europa League qualifying, where certain losing clubs can move down into another competition. Once a club loses its final Conference League qualifying tie, its European campaign ends.

Does Losing the Conference League Play-Off Give Another Chance?

No. Conference League play-off winners qualify for the league phase. The losers are eliminated. There is no additional European competition to enter.

Does Movement Between UEFA Competitions Continue After the League Phase Starts?

No. The transfer system applies during qualifying. Once the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League league phases begin, clubs stay within their competition.

A Europa League team cannot later drop into the Conference League because it finishes low in the league table. Likewise, a Conference League team finishing 25th to 36th is simply eliminated.

Do Clubs Still Need to Meet UEFA Admission Requirements?

Yes. Sporting qualification alone is not enough. Clubs must also satisfy UEFA's admission rules, which include matters such as:

  • club licensing

  • sporting integrity

  • competition eligibility

  • relevant stadium and administrative requirements

A domestic finishing position gives a club a sporting route, but UEFA participation remains subject to those competition requirements.

A Simple Conference League Qualification Example

Imagine Club A finishes in the domestic position allocated a Conference League place by its association. Its association's access list puts that place in the play-off round. Club A therefore enters the Conference League play-offs.

It wins its two-legged tie. Club A reaches the league phase. Now imagine Club B is already playing in the Europa League play-offs. Club B loses that tie. Instead of being eliminated from Europe, it enters the Conference League league phase directly.

The two clubs have reached the same 36-team competition through completely different routes.

Common Conference League Qualification Misunderstandings

  1. There is no universal domestic league position that qualifies for the Conference League.

  2. Domestic cup winners can qualify depending on the association's access allocation.

  3. Association coefficient and club coefficient are not the same thing. The association ranking influences access, while club coefficient mainly affects seeding.

  4. A domestic champion can end up in the Conference League after being eliminated from higher UEFA qualifying competitions.

  5. Clubs can move from the Champions League to the Europa League and then to the Conference League during qualifying.

  6. Europa League qualifying losers can enter the Conference League at designated stages.

  7. Europa League play-off losers enter the Conference League league phase.

  8. For 2026/27, there were no direct Conference League league-phase qualifiers.

  9. Winning the Conference League does not automatically qualify a club to defend the trophy. The winner receives a place in the following Europa League league phase instead.

  10. Conference League qualifying losers do not drop into another UEFA competition.

Conference League Qualification at a Glance

Conference League qualification begins with domestic competition results and UEFA's access list. Association coefficients help determine how many representatives each country receives and when those clubs enter.

Teams can qualify through domestic league positions, domestic cup routes or, in limited cases, another UEFA-approved domestic competition. The qualifying tournament is divided into a Main Path and Champions Path.

Clubs can also enter after elimination from designated Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds. For 2026/27, there were no direct league-phase entrants. The final 36-team field consisted of 24 Conference League play-off winners and 12 Europa League play-off losers.

Final Thoughts

Conference League qualification is more complicated than simply saying a team finishes in a certain domestic league position and enters the competition. UEFA's access list determines how many places each association receives and where those clubs start.

Domestic league results and cup competitions provide the initial qualification routes. After that, the qualifying system becomes connected to the Champions League and Europa League.

Clubs eliminated from higher competitions can move into the Conference League at designated stages, while Conference League losers have no lower competition to enter.

For me, the most important point is this: domestic results get clubs into UEFA's access system, but the access list determines where their Conference League journey begins and whether they must survive one qualifying tie or several before reaching the league phase.
