Coventry City are back in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, and their challenge in 2026/27 is very different from the one they faced while winning the Championship.
Frank Lampard guided the Sky Blues to the 2025/26 Championship title with 95 points and 97 goals, but promotion has forced the club to strengthen almost every level of the squad. Coventry have added Caleb Yirenkyi, Aurèle Amenda, Loum Tchaouna and Taiwo Awoniyi, made Carl Rushworth and Frank Onyeka permanent members of the group, brought Gustavo Hamer back to the club and added young forward Sidiki Cherif.
Their 3-0 opening defeat at champions Arsenal showed the scale of the step up, but one match against the defending Premier League champions should not define Coventry’s chances. The more important question is whether Lampard now has enough quality and depth to manage injuries, poor form and the intensity of a full top-flight season.

The transfer window remains open, so Lampard’s final squad could still change.
Goalkeeper Depth

Carl Rushworth enters the season as Coventry’s leading goalkeeper. After helping the club win promotion and earning the Championship Golden Glove, his permanent arrival gives Coventry continuity in one of the most important positions on the pitch. Ben Wilson provides experienced competition, while Oliver Dovin gives Lampard another senior option.
Coventry therefore have enough goalkeeper numbers, although Rushworth now has to demonstrate that his Championship performances can translate to a much more demanding level. The difference in shot volume, speed of attacks and quality of finishing in the Premier League could place considerably more pressure on Coventry’s No. 1 than he faced during much of the promotion campaign.

Defensive Depth
Centre-Back Options
Aurèle Amenda is the most important defensive addition. The Switzerland international arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt with Bundesliga and Champions League experience, giving Coventry a centre-back who has already operated against high-level opposition. He started alongside Bobby Thomas against Arsenal, suggesting that pairing could become an important part of Lampard’s defensive structure.
Thomas was one of Coventry’s regular performers during the promotion campaign, while Liam Kitching, Luke Woolfenden and Joel Latibeaudiere provide alternatives. The quantity is reasonable. The uncertainty is Premier League quality.
Coventry’s established defenders were excellent enough to win the Championship, but repeatedly defending against Premier League forwards is a different challenge. Amenda raises the level, yet the rest of the unit still has to prove it can make that transition consistently. One injury should be manageable. Two simultaneous absences among the preferred centre-backs would test the depth much more severely.

Full-Back Options
Milan van Ewijk remains one of Coventry’s most dangerous defenders going forward. His eight assists during the promotion season showed how important his overlapping runs and delivery can be. He gives Lampard genuine width when Coventry’s attacking players move into central areas. Kaine Kesler-Hayden provides natural right-back competition, while Latibeaudiere can also cover the position more conservatively.
On the left, Jay Dasilva started the Premier League opener and provides attacking energy. Jake Bidwell offers greater experience, while Miguel Ángel Brau gives Lampard another option. Coventry have more full-back depth than many promoted sides, although Van Ewijk remains particularly difficult to replace because of the attacking contribution he provides.

Midfield Depth
Midfield may now be Coventry’s strongest department. Captain Matt Grimes remains central to the team. His passing, composure and set-piece delivery were major features of the promotion campaign, during which Coventry scored a Championship-high 29 goals from set plays. Lampard has surrounded him with significantly more athleticism.
Frank Onyeka’s loan has been converted into a permanent move after he became an important part of the team last season. His ability to press, recover possession and cover ground gives Coventry a useful defensive presence.
Caleb Yirenkyi brings similar energy alongside greater developmental upside. The Ghana international arrived from Nordsjælland after winning the Danish Superliga Young Player of the Year award and was immediately trusted to start at Arsenal.
Gustavo Hamer’s return gives Coventry another player capable of progressing the ball and contributing in advanced areas, while Josh Eccles and Victor Torp provide further rotation options. Jack Rudoni can also operate higher from midfield when Lampard wants additional creativity. The strength here is variety. Grimes can dictate, Onyeka can disrupt, Yirenkyi can carry and press, while Hamer and Rudoni can provide greater attacking influence.

Attacking Depth
1. Wide and Creative Options
Loum Tchaouna was signed to add Premier League experience and direct attacking ability. The former Burnley winger started immediately against Arsenal and produced one of Coventry’s better efforts with an attempted overhead kick. His pace and willingness to attack defenders should be especially useful when Coventry play on the counter.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto remains another proven creative option from the right, while Ephron Mason-Clark gives Lampard additional running and one-versus-one ability. Rudoni can operate as an advanced midfielder rather than a conventional winger, allowing Coventry to alter their attacking structure.
Brandon Thomas-Asante also gives Lampard flexibility because he can operate across the frontline rather than exclusively as a centre-forward. There are enough options to rotate, but Coventry do not possess an established Premier League match-winner in this area. Their success may depend on several players collectively increasing their output rather than one attacker carrying the creative burden.

2. Centre-Forward Options
This position has become particularly important because Haji Wright is currently unavailable. Wright scored 17 Championship goals last season but is expected to miss around 12 weeks with a quad injury. That removes Coventry’s most productive forward from the opening phase of their Premier League return. Lampard does at least have alternatives.
Ellis Simms ended last season strongly, including a hat-trick against Watford on the final day, and started at Arsenal. Taiwo Awoniyi brings valuable Premier League experience following his move from Nottingham Forest. His strength, running behind defenders and ability to occupy centre-backs, could become especially useful when Coventry need to play more directly.
Sidiki Cherif adds another young forward after joining from Fenerbahçe, although he should be allowed time to develop rather than immediately being treated as the answer to Wright’s injury. Coventry therefore have good numbers at striker. Wright’s absence still reduces the quality immediately available, but signing Awoniyi means Lampard does not have to depend entirely on Simms.

How Much Quality Is There Beyond the Starting XI?
Coventry’s opening team at Arsenal offered a useful indication. Rushworth started behind Van Ewijk, Thomas, Amenda and Dasilva, with Grimes, Onyeka and Yirenkyi in midfield. Tchaouna, Thomas-Asante and Simms formed the attacking group.
That still left Rudoni, Sakamoto, Hamer, Torp, Eccles, Kitching, Latibeaudiere and Awoniyi on the bench. For a newly promoted team, that is encouraging. Lampard can change his midfield or attack without immediately relying on academy players. The question is whether the second group can perform at Premier League level rather than whether alternatives exist.
Where Coventry Are Strongest
Central midfield currently looks like Coventry’s deepest unit. Grimes, Onyeka, Yirenkyi, Hamer, Eccles, Torp and Rudoni give Lampard several combinations and enough variety to alter the team depending on the opposition.
Full-back also looks relatively secure, particularly on the right through Van Ewijk and Kesler-Hayden.
Centre-forward numbers have improved substantially following Awoniyi and Cherif’s arrivals. Wright’s injury is significant, but Coventry have taken steps to avoid being dependent on one striker.
Where Coventry Look Vulnerable
Centre-back is the biggest question. Amenda adds important top-level experience, but several of the alternatives have little or no Premier League experience. Coventry will need their Championship defenders to adapt quickly. Wide attack is another area where the depth may be better in quantity than proven quality.
Tchaouna has Premier League experience, while Sakamoto and Mason-Clark were productive in the Championship, but Coventry still need to discover who can consistently create and score against top-flight defences. The squad also lacks Premier League experience overall compared with established sides. That does not mean the players cannot succeed, but the early months will involve considerable adaptation.
Key Players for Squad Stability
1. Matt Grimes
Grimes controls Coventry’s tempo and remains their leading set-piece specialist. His absence would affect both the midfield structure and one of the team’s most productive attacking weapons.
2. Milan van Ewijk
His attacking contribution from right-back gives Coventry an additional route forward. Lampard has alternatives, but few offer the same combination of pace and final-third productivity.
3. Aurèle Amenda
Coventry signed Amenda partly because they needed more experience at a higher competitive level. His ability to settle quickly could be crucial to making the defence Premier League-ready.
How Injuries Could Test Coventry
Wright’s injury is already providing the first significant test. Without summer reinforcements, losing a 17-goal striker for around three months could have created a major problem. Awoniyi, Simms and Cherif give Lampard enough options to avoid that becoming an immediate crisis.
Midfield also appears capable of absorbing one or two absences because of the number of credible options available. Defence is less secure. A prolonged absence for Amenda or Thomas would force Lampard to rely heavily on players with limited Premier League experience. That makes defensive availability particularly important during the early months.
Fixture Load and Rotation
Coventry have no European football, which should help their adjustment to the Premier League. Their main commitments are the 38 league matches and the domestic cups, meaning Lampard should usually have more preparation time between fixtures than clubs competing in Europe.
That reduces the need for an enormous squad. It also allows Coventry to prioritize survival without constantly rotating their strongest players because of Thursday-night European matches. Cup competitions should provide opportunities for players such as Cherif, Eccles, Torp, Kesler-Hayden and other rotation options.
Can Coventry’s Squad Handle the Premier League?
There is enough depth to give them a chance. Coventry have not approached promotion by simply retaining the Championship squad and hoping it will be sufficient. They have invested in a goalkeeper, central defender, midfielders, winger and forwards.
Yirenkyi raises the athletic level of midfield. Amenda adds defensive experience. Tchaouna provides another direct attacker, while Awoniyi gives Lampard a striker who already understands Premier League football.
Their opening defeat at Arsenal also needs context. Facing the defending champions away from home is one of the most difficult possible introductions to the division. Matches against clubs closer to Coventry’s level will provide a better measure of how competitive this squad really is.
Overall Squad Depth Assessment
Overall Assessment: Good Depth for a Promoted Club, With Defensive Questions
Coventry have built a deeper squad than the one that won the Championship. Midfield is the strongest area, striker depth has improved, and the full-back positions provide useful alternatives. The main concern is whether the central defenders and wide attackers can make the step up quickly enough. Coventry have sufficient numbers. What they still need to establish is Premier League-level consistency.
Conclusion
Coventry City have approached their Premier League return with sensible investment rather than relying entirely on the players who won promotion. Caleb Yirenkyi, Aurèle Amenda, Loum Tchaouna and Taiwo Awoniyi improve different parts of the team, while permanent deals for Frank Onyeka and Carl Rushworth provide valuable continuity. Gustavo Hamer’s return gives Lampard another proven creative midfield option.
Central midfield stands out as the squad’s strongest area, while Wright’s injury is easier to manage because Coventry now have several centre-forwards. The main uncertainty is defence. Amenda strengthens the starting level, but the group behind him must prove it can consistently handle Premier League attackers.
For a promoted side without European commitments, Coventry have reasonable depth. Their survival prospects will depend less on the number of players available and more on how quickly those players adjust to the speed and quality of the top flight.
