Real Madrid enter 2026/27 with one of the deepest squads in Europe and a significant change on the touchline. José Mourinho has returned to the club, replacing the previous coaching structure with a squad strengthened by six senior summer additions.
Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries reinforce the defence. Marc Cucurella adds another experienced left-back. Bernardo Silva gives Madrid another elite technical midfielder, while Yan Diomande increases the wide-attacking options.
Carlos Espí is the most interesting addition for squad balance because he gives Mourinho another natural centre-forward rather than simply another winger capable of filling the position.
Carvajal and David Alaba departed after long careers at the club, meaning the defensive rebuild is not simply about adding numbers. Madrid have replaced experience with younger and more athletic alternatives.
The result is a squad with very few obvious numerical weaknesses. The more useful question is where the quality drop becomes noticeable when Mourinho rotates.

Real Madrid’s 2026/27 Squad at a Glance
The main first-team options include:
Goalkeepers: Thibaut Courtois, Andriy Lunin
Centre-backs: Dean Huijsen, Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger, Raúl Asencio, Éder Militão
Right-back: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Denzel Dumfries
Left-back: Marc Cucurella, Álvaro Carreras, Ferland Mendy
Central midfield: Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Thiago Pitarch
Wide and supporting attack: Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, Brahim Díaz, Yan Diomande
Centre-forward: Kylian Mbappé, Endrick, Carlos Espí
Militão, Mendy and Rodrygo are currently unavailable while completing their recovery programmes.
Goalkeeper Remains One of the Most Secure Positions
Courtois remains the clear first choice. His shot-stopping, aerial control and experience in high-pressure matches make him difficult to replace at the same level.

But Madrid are much better protected than most clubs because Lunin is an established international goalkeeper with extensive first-team experience.
That is genuine depth. Mourinho can use Lunin in domestic cup matches or during a Courtois absence without having to significantly change the way the team builds from the back.
Centre-Back Depth Is Exceptional
Madrid now have several high-level central defenders with different qualities. Huijsen gives the team composure in possession and progressive passing. Konaté adds pace, power and the ability to defend aggressively in larger spaces.
Rüdiger remains an experienced physical defender, while Asencio gives Mourinho another natural option from within the club structure. Militão should increase the competition further once he completes his recovery.
This means Madrid can lose one centre-back without creating a major problem. Even two absences are manageable. That is particularly important under Mourinho because he can change the type of pairing depending on the opponent rather than simply selecting whichever defenders are healthy.
A Huijsen-Konaté partnership offers athleticism and buildup quality. Rüdiger can add greater physical confrontation, while Militão brings recovery speed when fit. The main challenge will be distributing minutes once the entire group is available.

Full-Back Has Been Completely Reshaped
Carvajal’s departure created a major change on the right. Madrid have responded with two very different options. Trent Alexander-Arnold offers elite passing and creativity from deeper positions.
His ability to move inside or play long diagonal passes gives Mourinho another way to progress possession. Dumfries is more direct. He provides power, running and a strong attacking presence when advancing beyond the winger.
That difference gives Mourinho tactical choice rather than simply a starter and backup. The left side is similarly deep. Cucurella brings intensity, defensive aggression and experience playing in several structures.
Álvaro Carreras offers another modern attacking full-back and has already contributed offensively this season. Mendy remains part of the squad but is currently recovering. Once everyone is fit, full-back should be one of Madrid’s best-covered departments.
Midfield Is Madrid’s Biggest Strength
There may not be another area of the squad with this much high-level variety. Tchouaméni provides the most natural holding-midfield presence. Camavinga gives Mourinho ball carrying, defensive range and the ability to play in several positions.
Valverde adds intensity, pressing and forward running. Bellingham remains one of the most important attacking midfielders because he combines creativity with goals and physical presence inside the penalty area.
Then there is Bernardo Silva. His arrival adds another player capable of controlling possession in tight spaces, playing centrally or moving toward the right side.
Arda Güler offers more final-third invention, while Thiago Pitarch provides younger depth and continues his development around the senior team. The important point is not simply that Madrid have seven midfielders. They have seven midfielders who solve different problems.
Mourinho can build a more physical midfield around Tchouaméni and Valverde, use Bernardo to improve possession control, introduce Güler when greater creativity is required, or move Bellingham closer to Mbappé. This is elite depth.

Bellingham Does Not Have to Carry All the Creativity
One weakness in previous versions of Madrid’s midfield was the danger of becoming too dependent on Bellingham for attacking contributions through central areas. Bernardo and Güler reduce that dependence.
Bernardo can control the right half-space, combine with the full-back and help Madrid retain possession around compact defensive blocks. Güler offers more risk in the final pass and shooting positions.
That allows Bellingham to vary his role rather than having to be the primary creator every week. He remains extremely important, but there are now credible tactical alternatives rather than merely positional replacements.
Wide Attack Has Quality but Rodrygo’s Injury Matters
Vinícius remains the main left-sided attacking reference. His pace, dribbling and ability to create chances without needing elaborate buildup make him one of the hardest players in the squad to replace.
Rodrygo would normally give Mourinho another elite winger capable of playing on either flank or centrally. His long rehabilitation from knee surgery means that option is currently unavailable. Brahim can operate from either wing or move inside.
Yan Diomande has added another direct attacker and has already earned a league start. His pace and willingness to attack defenders give Mourinho another natural wide threat.
The group remains strong without Rodrygo, but his absence reduces the number of proven top-level alternatives behind Vinícius. Diomande’s development will therefore matter more during the first half of the season than it might have if Rodrygo were fully fit.

Mbappé Has Better Natural Cover
Mbappé remains the obvious first-choice centre-forward and the main source of goals. He has already started the season in excellent form. But Madrid are no longer relying only on moving a winger centrally whenever he needs rest.
Endrick remains a natural striker and gives Mourinho an explosive alternative capable of attacking space behind a defence. Carlos Espí adds another profile. At 1.94 metres, Espí gives Madrid greater physical presence inside the box and can provide a target when opponents defend deep.
He has already scored two late league goals despite playing very limited minutes, including the stoppage-time winner against Elche. His role is particularly useful because he does not need to become a second Mbappé. Madrid need him to solve different problems.
Against a deep defence, Espí can occupy centre-backs and attack crosses. Endrick can provide more dynamic movement, while Mbappé remains the complete first-choice option. That is healthy striker depth.
Injuries Have Already Shown the Value of the Squad
Madrid are currently without Militão, Mendy and Rodrygo. Earlier in the season, Tchouaméni, Endrick, Asencio and Thiago also spent periods working individually before returning.
Despite those absences, Mourinho has been able to name experienced teams in both La Liga and the Champions League. That illustrates the difference between squad size and usable depth. Madrid have enough defenders to cover Militão.
Cucurella and Carreras mean Mendy’s absence does not create a left-back problem. Diomande and Brahim provide wide options while Rodrygo recovers. The injury that would probably change the team most dramatically is an extended absence for Mbappé or Vinícius, because their individual attacking qualities remain difficult to reproduce.
Champions League Rotation Will Be Necessary
Madrid have already beaten Inter 2-1 in their Champions League opener. The remaining league-phase schedule includes Roma, Leipzig, AEK Athens, PSV, Arsenal, LASK and Shakhtar Donetsk. That means Mourinho cannot simply use the same XI every week.
The squad is built for rotation. Konaté, Rüdiger, Huijsen and eventually Militão can share centre-back minutes. Trent and Dumfries offer two strong right-back options. The midfield is deep enough for significant changes without sacrificing quality.
Endrick, Espí, Brahim and Diomande can absorb attacking minutes around Mbappé and Vinícius. That depth should become particularly valuable during the periods when Champions League and La Liga matches are separated by only a few days.
Where Does the Real Quality Drop Appear?
There are very few numerical shortages. The more relevant issue is replacing the elite qualities of certain starters. Courtois has an excellent backup, but he remains one of the world’s most influential goalkeepers.
Vinícius can be replaced positionally, but not easily in terms of one-versus-one threat. Mbappé has two natural centre-forward alternatives, but neither currently offers his combination of pace, movement and goals.
Bellingham can be replaced tactically, although his ability to contribute in almost every phase is unique. Those are normal dependencies even for an elite squad. Elsewhere, Madrid are extremely well protected.
Overall Squad Depth Assessment
Overall Assessment: Elite Depth With Very Few Structural Weaknesses
Real Madrid have one of the most complete squads in La Liga. Defence has been substantially strengthened through Konaté, Dumfries and Cucurella.
Midfield may be the deepest department in the squad, with Tchouaméni, Camavinga, Valverde, Bellingham, Bernardo and Güler giving Mourinho numerous high-level combinations.
The attack contains two elite starters in Mbappé and Vinícius, while Endrick, Espí, Brahim and Diomande provide meaningful alternatives. Rodrygo’s injury currently reduces the proven wide depth, but that is an availability issue rather than a poorly constructed squad.
Conclusion
Real Madrid’s 2026/27 squad has been built to compete across La Liga and the Champions League without relying on one fixed starting XI. Ibrahima Konaté strengthens an already talented centre-back group.
Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella increase the full-back options, while Bernardo Silva makes an exceptional midfield even deeper. Yan Diomande adds another wide threat, and Carlos Espí gives José Mourinho a different type of centre-forward behind Kylian Mbappé.
The biggest strength is not simply the number of players. It is the number of different solutions. Mourinho can change the defence, midfield structure or attacking profile without abandoning the overall quality of the team.
Aside from the unavoidable dependence on world-class players such as Mbappé, Vinícius and Bellingham, Real Madrid has very few genuine squad-depth weaknesses.
