Goalkeeper Depth
Senne Lammens is firmly established as United’s first-choice goalkeeper. His debut Premier League season was an impressive one, and he enters 2026/27 with the No. 1 shirt and the security of having already demonstrated that he can handle the position.
Karl Darlow provides experienced cover after arriving from Leeds. He has significant Premier League experience and is a sensible backup for a club returning to Champions League football. Tom Heaton provides additional depth. United are therefore much more settled in goal than they were during previous seasons.

Defensive Depth
Central defence is well stocked. De Ligt, Martínez and Yoro all have legitimate claims to important minutes, while Maguire provides experience and aerial strength. Heaven gives Carrick another young option who has already played senior football.

Martínez provides left-footed progression, Yoro offers recovery pace, De Ligt brings physicality, and Maguire remains particularly useful against aerially strong opponents. Dalot and Mazraoui can both play on the right, while Dorgu is the most natural attacking option on the left. Midfield Is United’s Deepest Area
United’s biggest summer improvement is obvious. Tielemans adds control, passing range and extensive Premier League experience. Andrey Santos gives Carrick another progressive midfielder capable of carrying responsibility in possession, while Baleba adds power, ball-winning and the ability to drive forward from deeper areas.

Mbeumo remains a reliable source of goals and movement from the right, while Cunha can operate from the left, centrally or behind a striker. Amad gives Carrick another creative right-sided option but is currently unavailable following a training injury.
Rashford has returned to the first-team group and gives United pace from the left or through the middle. His presence significantly improves the attacking numbers compared with last season.
The interesting prospect is Shea Lacey, who has moved closer to the senior group. His technical ability makes him a genuine developmental option, although he should not be treated as equivalent cover for an established Premier League attacker yet. United can rotate their wide players effectively when everyone is fit.

Benjamin Šeško remains the natural first-choice No. 9. He finished joint-top scorer for United last season alongside Mbeumo and offers the size, movement and penalty-box presence Carrick needs when using a conventional striker. Joshua Zirkzee provides a different interpretation of the role. He prefers dropping towards midfield and connecting attacks rather than constantly occupying the penalty area.
Rashford can play centrally, while Cunha was used as a false nine against Hull when Carrick’s options were restricted. Both are established tactical alternatives, but neither should be counted as identical cover for Šeško. That distinction matters. United have several ways of constructing an attack without Šeško, but fewer players capable of reproducing what he provides as a specialist centre-forward.

Where Manchester United Are Strongest
Central midfield is comfortably the deepest area of the squad. Once Baleba returns, Carrick can choose from Tielemans, Santos, Baleba, Mainoo and Ugarte before even considering Bruno or Mount in deeper combinations. Central defence is another strength. United should be able to rotate without a dramatic decline if one defender is unavailable. The attacking midfield positions also contain significant talent, particularly when Bruno, Mbeumo, Cunha and Amad are all available.
Where United Could Be Exposed
The biggest issue is not a major numerical shortage but the dependence on particular profiles. Bruno remains difficult to replace creatively. United have talented midfielders, but nobody else produced anything close to his chance creation last season. Šeško presents a similar issue at centre-forward. Zirkzee is a credible alternative but changes the way the team attacks.
Left-back could also become vulnerable if Dorgu and Shaw are unavailable simultaneously. Current injuries provide another reminder that theoretical depth is not the same as available depth.
