Viking vs Bayern Munich Preview

Viking welcome Bayern Munich to Stavanger for one of the biggest home fixtures of their 2026/27 Champions League league phase. The two teams experienced very different opening nights. Viking lost 3–1 away to Stuttgart despite Zlatko Tripić briefly bringing them level in the first half.

Bayern opened with an emphatic 5–0 home victory over Bodø/Glimt. Jamal Musiala broke the deadlock shortly after half-time before Harry Kane, Alphonso Davies and Michael Olise completed the scoring.

That gives Bayern three points and a +5 goal difference after Matchday 1, while Viking enter their first home league-phase match looking for their first points.

The difference in European experience and squad depth is obvious, but Viking's recent home form means Bayern should not treat the trip to Stavanger casually. Viking have followed their defeat in Stuttgart with an 8–1 win over Kristiansund and a 3–0 victory over Lillestrøm.

Viking vs Bayern Munich Head-to-Head

This will be the first competitive UEFA meeting between Viking and Bayern Munich. There is therefore no direct head-to-head record to use. The broader history against clubs from the two countries provides some context.

Viking have found German opposition difficult historically. Following their 3–1 defeat at Stuttgart on Matchday 1, their record against German clubs stands at two wins, three draws and seven defeats.

Bayern have been much more successful against Norwegian opposition. Their 5–0 victory over Bodø/Glimt extended Bayern's unbeaten European record against Norwegian clubs to nine matches, with seven wins and two draws.

Those numbers underline the difference in European pedigree, but the current matchup should still be judged primarily through form, personnel and Viking's home advantage.

That gives Viking three wins, one draw and one defeat across those five matches, with 16 goals scored. Their two matches since losing in Stuttgart have been particularly impressive.

Eight goals against Kristiansund demonstrated the attacking variety available to Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim. Erik Botheim scored twice, while Peter Christiansen, Henrik Heggheim, Kristoffer Haugen, Henrik Bjørdal, Niklas Fuglestad and Simen Kvia-Egeskog also scored.

Viking then followed that with a 3–0 win over Lillestrøm. Kristoffer Haugen opened the scoring, Gianni Stensness added the second and Christiansen converted a late penalty. Their home results are especially relevant.

Viking beat Dinamo Zagreb 3–1 in their Champions League play-off, defeated Aalesund 2–1, scored eight against Kristiansund and then kept a clean sheet against Lillestrøm. Bayern represent a much higher level of opposition, but Viking have genuine evidence that they are difficult to contain at Lyse Arena.

Bayern Munich's Recent Form

Bayern's recent results are even stronger:

Vincent Kompany's side have won four of those five matches and remain unbeaten across the sequence. They have scored 18 goals and conceded only twice. The two home performances immediately before the international period were particularly dominant.

Bayern scored five against Bodø/Glimt before putting seven past Union Berlin. Michael Olise scored twice in the Champions League opener and followed that with a hat-trick against Union.

Harry Kane also continues to provide the central scoring threat. He scored against Bodø/Glimt and twice against Union Berlin. The only recent result that interrupted Bayern's attacking rhythm was the 0–0 draw away to Schalke.

That match offers Viking at least some evidence that Bayern can be frustrated when an opponent remains organised and prevents them from creating space around the penalty area.

Team News

Bayern have a significant injury concern involving Jamal Musiala. The midfielder suffered a torn muscle fibre in his right thigh while warming up for Germany's Nations League match against the Netherlands on 24 September. He subsequently returned to Bayern to begin rehabilitation.

There is currently no firm return date, so I would not build the Viking analysis around Musiala being available. Konrad Laimer has also been recovering from an adductor problem that kept him out of Bayern's 7–0 victory over Union Berlin. His injury was described as minor, and he has been working towards a return during the international period.

Bayern still have considerable attacking depth. Their current Champions League squad includes Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Luis Díaz, Serge Gnabry, Ismael Saibari, Lennart Karl and several midfield options around them.

Viking have their own availability issue involving Veton Berisha. The forward has been recovering from a long-term thigh problem and suffered another setback during his rehabilitation. His return should therefore not be assumed for Bayern.

Aarsheim still has Peter Christiansen, Erik Botheim, Romano Postema and Nick D'Agostino registered among his forward options, while Tripić remains one of Viking's most influential attacking players. Both teams have domestic fixtures before Matchday 2, so the final injury picture should be reassessed closer to kickoff.

How Viking Could Approach Bayern

Viking cannot approach Bayern exactly as they would a domestic opponent. Trying to press Bayern continuously would create considerable risk. Kompany's side have enough technical quality to play through an uncoordinated press, particularly through Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović in deeper midfield areas.

Viking therefore need to choose their moments. Their Champions League opener against Stuttgart showed some of the danger. Viking equalised through Tripić in the 22nd minute but conceded again four minutes later and were 3–1 down by the 32nd minute.

Against Bayern, periods of defensive instability could be even more damaging. A compact shape with selective pressing may therefore be more realistic.

Viking can protect central spaces, encourage Bayern towards wider areas and then increase pressure when the ball moves backwards or an isolated player receives near the touchline.

The other part of the plan has to be attacking quickly when possession changes. Bayern's full-backs and wide players can advance aggressively. Viking need to attack the spaces that appear before Bayern have time to recover their defensive structure.

How Bayern Could Threaten Viking

Bayern should expect to control possession. Their challenge will be avoiding unnecessary frustration if Viking defend deeper than the opponents they usually face domestically. The Bodø/Glimt match provides a useful example.

Bayern were held scoreless throughout the first half despite controlling the match. Once Musiala broke the deadlock shortly after the restart, spaces began to appear and Bayern scored four more times.

Patience could therefore be important again. Michael Olise can create advantages from wide areas, while Luis Díaz gives Bayern another direct dribbling threat. Harry Kane's movement creates a different problem.

If Viking's centre-backs remain tight to him, Kane can move away from the defensive line and create space for runners. If they allow him to receive freely between midfield and defence, Bayern can use him to connect attacks.

Set pieces could also matter. Bayern have the physical quality of Jonathan Tah, Dayot Upamecano and Kane in the penalty area, alongside strong delivery from players such as Kimmich and Olise.

Key Players

Zlatko Tripić

Tripić is one of Viking's most important attacking players and their captain. He scored Viking's goal against Stuttgart and has already contributed three goals across Viking's current Champions League campaign, including qualifying.

His creativity is equally important. Tripić assisted twice in the 8–1 win over Kristiansund and created the opening goal against Lillestrøm. Viking may not have long periods of possession against Bayern, so his ability to produce something from limited attacking opportunities becomes particularly valuable.

Peter Christiansen

Christiansen gives Viking a more direct threat around the penalty area. He scored against Kristiansund and converted the penalty that completed the 3–0 victory over Lillestrøm.

Against Bayern, Viking's forwards may need to spend long periods without the ball. Christiansen's ability to occupy defenders and make attacking moments count could therefore become important.

Harry Kane

Kane remains Bayern's central reference in attack. He scored in their 5–0 Champions League victory over Bodø/Glimt and then added two more goals against Union Berlin. Viking cannot focus solely on preventing him from shooting.

Kane's movement away from the centre-forward position can also create space for Olise, Díaz and other runners to attack. Managing those movements without opening gaps in the defensive line will be one of Viking's biggest challenges.

Michael Olise

Olise enters the fixture in outstanding form. He scored twice against Bodø/Glimt and followed that performance with a hat-trick in Bayern's 7–0 win over Union Berlin.

His ability to receive from the right, move inside and either shoot or create for teammates makes him difficult to defend with one player. With Musiala currently injured, Olise's creativity could become even more important to Bayern's attacking structure.

Where the Match Could Be Decided

Three areas stand out to me.

1. Viking's Defensive Concentration

Viking cannot afford another sequence like the one they experienced in Stuttgart. They conceded three goals between the 20th and 32nd minutes, turning a competitive start into a difficult match within a short period.

Bayern have recently shown how quickly they can punish opponents once a game opens. Viking need to remain organised even after conceding chances or losing possession.

2. Viking's Transitions

Bayern should have significantly more possession. That means Viking's best attacking opportunities may come immediately after regaining the ball. Tripić and Christiansen become particularly important in those situations.

If Viking move the ball slowly, Bayern will recover their shape. If the first forward pass is accurate, the hosts may find temporary space behind Bayern's advanced players.

3. Bayern's Wide Attack

Viking need to protect the centre, but defending too narrowly creates another problem. Olise, Díaz, Davies and Bayern's other wide options can stretch the defensive block before attacking the spaces that appear.

The home side therefore need good coordination between their full-backs, midfielders and centre-backs. Allowing repeated one-on-one situations near the penalty area would make an already difficult assignment considerably harder.

What the Numbers Tell Me

Both teams have played only one league-phase match, so Champions League statistics remain a small sample. Bayern have three points, five goals scored and none conceded.

Viking have no points, one goal scored and three conceded. Bayern's Matchday 1 numbers underline their control. They finished with 57% possession and 93% passing accuracy against Bodø/Glimt before eventually winning 5–0.

Viking had 40% possession away at Stuttgart and lost 3–1. The broader form provides more useful context. Bayern have scored 18 goals across their last five matches while conceding only twice.

Viking have scored 16 across their last five and arrive after consecutive domestic wins by an aggregate score of 11–1. The quality of opposition is clearly different, but Viking's scoring form should still prevent Bayern from assuming the match will take care of itself.

Statistical Edge and Draw Likelihood

Bayern have the stronger numbers across almost every major area. They are unbeaten in their last five matches, have scored 18 times during that sequence and began the Champions League with a five-goal victory.

Their historical record against Norwegian opposition is another advantage. Bayern have not lost any of their nine European matches against Norwegian clubs. Viking's strongest evidence comes from their home form.

Their recent home victories over Dinamo Zagreb, Aalesund, Kristiansund and Lillestrøm produced 16 goals and only three conceded. That record makes the opening stages particularly important.

If Viking keep the game level and prevent Bayern from establishing early control, the atmosphere at Lyse Arena could become increasingly influential. The possibility of a draw becomes more realistic if Viking can reach the latter stages without having to chase the game.

If Bayern score early, the tactical problem becomes much harder. Viking would eventually need to move more players forward, creating additional space for Bayern's attackers.

Viking vs Bayern Munich Outlook

This is one of the clearest contrasts on Matchday 2. Viking are playing their first home match of the league phase after losing in Stuttgart, while Bayern arrive after a 5–0 European opener and a 7–0 domestic victory immediately before the international period.

The numbers naturally favour Bayern. What makes the fixture more interesting is Viking's form in Stavanger. They have scored 11 goals across their last two home matches and have already beaten Dinamo Zagreb at Lyse Arena during this Champions League campaign.

Their best chance is therefore not to treat Bayern with excessive caution. Viking need defensive discipline, but they also need enough attacking ambition to make Bayern uncomfortable when possession changes hands.

Tripić's creativity, Christiansen's movement and the energy of the home crowd can give them moments. Bayern's challenge is to prevent those moments from developing into sustained belief.

If Kompany's side control midfield, move Viking's defensive block from side to side and remain patient around the penalty area, their attacking quality should consistently create problems.

For me, the central question is whether Viking can keep their defensive structure intact long enough for their home form and transition threat to influence the match.

Bayern arrive with the stronger squad, the stronger European start and outstanding recent attacking numbers. Viking's opportunity comes from making Lyse Arena a much more uncomfortable environment than those numbers suggest.
