Manchester City vs AEK Athens 2026-27 Champions League: Head-to-Head, Form and Team News

Manchester City host AEK Athens at the Etihad Stadium in Champions League Matchday 3. Compare their current form, team news, tactical matchup and statistical strengths.

Manchester City host AEK Athens at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League league phase. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00pm BST, with both teams looking to recover from defeats on Matchday 2.

City opened their European campaign with a 2-0 victory away to Porto before losing 4-2 at home to defending champions Paris Saint-Germain. AEK also have three points, having beaten LASK 1-0 before suffering a 3-1 defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge.

Domestic form strongly favours City. Enzo Maresca's side have won all seven of their opening Premier League matches and sit six points clear at the top after beating Ipswich Town 3-2 on Saturday. AEK have also started strongly in Greece, taking 14 points from six matches and remaining unbeaten domestically. Their scheduled weekend game against Atromitos was postponed, giving Marko Nikolić's team additional recovery time before travelling to Manchester.

Head-to-Head Summary

Manchester City and AEK Athens have never met in a competitive match. Tuesday's Champions League fixture will therefore be the first head-to-head meeting between the clubs. UEFA's official head-to-head record lists only the upcoming Matchday 3 encounter.

City's official preview also confirms that the clubs have never previously faced each other. Manchester City have played Greek opposition in Europe before, including two victories without conceding against Olympiacos, but there is no direct history with AEK.

With no previous meetings available, current form, squad quality, European performance and tactical styles provide the most useful basis for comparison.

Previous Meetings

There are no previous verified competitive meetings between Manchester City and AEK Athens.

This will be their first competitive encounter, so a traditional last-10 head-to-head comparison is not possible. Instead, the analysis focuses on their recent results, Champions League performances and current squad situations.

Manchester City Current Form

Manchester City's last five competitive matches have produced four wins and one defeat. They beat Norwich City 5-0 in the League Cup, defeated Sunderland 5-3, won 3-0 away to Liverpool, lost 4-2 against Paris Saint-Germain and then beat Ipswich 3-2.

That sequence produced 18 goals scored and nine conceded. City's attacking output remains exceptional, although the nine goals allowed show that opponents have been able to create problems when Maresca's team lose control of transitions.

The 3-0 victory at Liverpool was one of City's strongest performances of the season. It was followed by a much more difficult European night against PSG, when the Champions League holders scored four times at the Etihad despite Erling Haaland adding another two European goals.

City responded domestically against Ipswich. Phil Foden opened the scoring and Haaland struck twice in a 3-2 victory, maintaining Maresca's perfect start in the Premier League. He became the first manager to win his opening seven Premier League matches in charge of a club.

The results illustrate City's biggest strength and their main concern. They can create large volumes of chances and score from several positions, but PSG and Sunderland both demonstrated that their defensive structure can still be exposed.

AEK Athens Current Form

AEK's last five completed competitive matches have produced three victories, one draw and one defeat. They drew 1-1 away to Asteras Tripolis, beat Panserraikos 8-1 in the Greek Cup, won 2-1 at Volos, defeated OFI 3-0 and then lost 3-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk.

That gives Nikolić's team 15 goals scored and six conceded during the sequence. The numbers show why AEK cannot be dismissed simply because of the difference between the Premier League and Greek Super League.

Their Champions League defeat against Shakhtar was also more competitive than the final score suggests. AEK took the lead in the 28th minute when Stavros Pilios created the opportunity for Lovro Majer, and they remained level until the final 10 minutes. Shakhtar eventually scored through Vinícius Tobias in the 80th minute and Gleiker Mendoza six minutes later.

AEK had opportunities of their own. Harold Moukoudi hit the post, Luka Jović missed from a promising position and Răzvan Marin forced an excellent save from Dmytro Riznyk with a free kick. That attacking threat provides some encouragement before their considerably more difficult trip to Manchester.

Their weekend league match at Atromitos was postponed, meaning AEK have not played since Wednesday's Champions League defeat. City, by comparison, were involved in an intense Premier League fixture on Saturday.

Manchester City Team News and Injuries

Manchester City emerged from the Ipswich victory with several fitness concerns. Haaland, Mateo Kovačić, Matheus Nunes, Nico O'Reilly and Antoine Semenyo all required attention during or after the match.

Maresca provided encouraging updates on Haaland, Kovačić and Nunes. He said all three told him they were okay after the game. O'Reilly continues to manage the back problem that first troubled him before the Coventry match.

Semenyo is the biggest immediate doubt. Maresca said City would need to wait before knowing the seriousness of his problem, making him the player whose availability is currently most uncertain for Tuesday.

City still possess considerable depth. Their UEFA squad contains attacking and midfield options including Haaland, Foden, Rayan Cherki, Jérémy Doku, Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernández, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Kovačić, while Rúben Dias, Marc Guéhi, Joško Gvardiol and Abdukodir Khusanov are among their defensive choices.

Maresca's Monday press conference should provide the final update on Semenyo and any players still feeling the effects of the Ipswich game.

AEK Athens Team News and Injuries

AEK were able to name a strong squad against Shakhtar. Alberto Brignoli started in goal, with Lazaros Rota, Moukoudi, Filipe Relvas and Pilios in defence. Majer, Marin and Milán Vitális were among the midfielders, while Aboubakary Koïta, Zini and Jović provided the attacking threat.

Nikolić also had useful options from the bench, including João Mário, Mijat Gaćinović, Kaan Kairinen, Derek Kutesa? Actually not listed; Barnabás Varga, Domagoj Vida and Oleksandr Zubkov were available among the substitutes against Shakhtar.

There has been no official announcement of a major new AEK injury or suspension specifically for the Manchester City match as of October 18. Their final travelling squad should therefore be used to confirm any late absences rather than assuming every registered player will be available.

The postponement of Saturday's Atromitos fixture could help considerably. Nikolić has had additional time to manage recovery following the Shakhtar game, while City have only two full days between facing Ipswich and playing AEK.

Tactical Match Analysis

Manchester City should dominate possession and territory. Maresca has generally built his team around patient buildup, midfield control and multiple players moving into attacking spaces around Haaland.

Haaland remains the obvious reference point. His two goals against Ipswich continued an outstanding start to the season, and he also scored twice against PSG. If available as expected, his movement against Moukoudi and Relvas will present AEK with their biggest defensive problem.

The space around Haaland is equally important. Foden, Cherki and Doku can all operate between or outside defensive lines, while Enzo Fernández and Anderson provide passing quality deeper in midfield. AEK cannot focus exclusively on the centre-forward without creating room for City's supporting attackers.

Nikolić is likely to need a compact defensive structure. AEK's Champions League statistics show an average possession figure of 46.5 per cent through their opening two league-phase matches, suggesting they are comfortable playing without controlling the majority of the ball.

Their best opportunities may come during transitions. Pilios showed his attacking value with the assist for Majer's goal against Shakhtar, while Koïta and Zini can carry the ball quickly into open spaces. Jović also gives them an experienced central target capable of occupying City's centre-backs.

City must therefore avoid turning sustained possession into defensive vulnerability. PSG exposed them by attacking quickly once possession changed, and Sunderland also scored three at the Etihad earlier in the season. AEK will have considerably fewer chances, making the quality of their first pass after a turnover particularly important.

Set pieces could offer another route for the visitors. Moukoudi hit the post from a corner against Shakhtar, while Marin tested the goalkeeper from a direct free kick. AEK may need
