USA and Mexico renew their rivalry at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on October 3. This is a friendly, but USA-Mexico rarely feels like an ordinary exhibition match.

Both countries are beginning new cycles after co-hosting the 2026 World Cup. Mauricio Pochettino remains in charge of the United States, while former Mexico captain Rafael Márquez has taken over El Tri.

Mexico Recent Form

Mexico reached the Round of 16 at the World Cup and were eliminated by England in a 3-2 game in Mexico City. Their final five World Cup matches were:

Pochettino has selected a highly experimental squad for this international window. Sixteen-year-old Cavan Sullivan is the headline inclusion and could become one of the youngest players ever to appear for the senior national team.

Tactical Battle

This match may look different from recent USA-Mexico meetings because both coaches are experimenting. USA are missing several established attackers and have brought a large group of young players.

That could encourage Pochettino to keep the tactical structure relatively simple. The Americans can use their athleticism, press in selected moments, and attack quickly after recovering possession. Mexico may be more comfortable controlling the ball.

This could be one of Mexico's clearest advantages. USA have athletic midfielders, but Mexico possess several players comfortable in possession. If Mexico can establish control through the centre, they can reduce the amount of transition football USA want.

Squad experimentation

Both coaches are thinking beyond this individual match. Pochettino has selected a very young USA squad, while Márquez is beginning his first camp as Mexico coach.

That means substitutions and tactical changes may be more extensive than they would be in a competitive USA-Mexico match. The result matters, but player evaluation matters as well.

What the H2H Record Tells Me

Mexico has the better historical record, but the rivalry has been much more balanced in recent years. USA enjoyed a particularly strong run from 2021 through early 2024, winning Nations League finals and the 2021 Gold Cup final.

For me, this game is more interesting as the beginning of two new cycles than as another chapter in the old USA-Mexico rivalry. USA are clearly looking towards the future.

Pochettino has left out several established players and selected a large number of young prospects, including Cavan Sullivan. That makes this one of the most experimental American squads we have seen in a major international window.

Mexico are also beginning again, but their transition is different. Márquez has retained more established internationals while introducing younger players around them. That may give Mexico greater continuity in this particular match.

USA's opportunity is to use their energy and athleticism to make the game uncomfortable, especially if Mexico become careless in possession. Mexico's challenge is to control midfield, avoid unnecessary turnovers and create enough quality service for Giménez and their other attackers.

The last two meetings have gone Mexico's way, but this friendly should not be treated like a direct continuation of the 2025 Gold Cup final. The squads are different, the World Cup has passed, and both countries are already looking towards the next major cycle.

That makes this match less about settling an old argument and more about seeing which new players begin to establish themselves in one of international football's most intense rivalries.
