Mexico continue their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup tonight, 22 May 2026, when they welcome Ghana to the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla for an international friendly. The match comes at an important stage for both countries, with the World Cup beginning in less than three weeks.
Mexico are preparing to co-host the tournament alongside the United States and Canada and will play the opening match against South Africa on 11 June. Ghana have also qualified and will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Mexico's most recent victory came in October 2023, when El Tri defeated Ghana 2-0 in Charlotte, North Carolina. That extended Mexico's perfect record against the Black Stars to four matches. Despite Ghana's long history of producing talented international teams, including the side that reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2010, they are still searching for their first positive result against Mexico.
Mexico Current Form
Mexico enter the game in encouraging form after making a much stronger start to 2026 than they managed during the closing months of 2025. Aguirre's team are unbeaten in all five of their matches this year. Their first three fixtures produced victories over Panama, Bolivia and Iceland before they stepped up the level of opposition considerably during the March international window.
Mexico began 2026 by beating Panama 1-0 away from home before recording another 1-0 victory against Bolivia. They then produced their most convincing performance of the year by defeating Iceland 4-0 in Querétaro in February. March provided a much tougher examination.

Three days later, El Tri drew 1-1 against Belgium in Chicago. Jorge Sánchez gave Mexico the lead before Dodi Lukebakio equalised shortly after half-time. Those results mean Mexico have won three and drawn two of their five games in 2026, conceding only once.
The unbeaten run has helped restore some confidence after a difficult end to 2025. However, tonight's game is less about protecting a record and more about Aguirre deciding which players deserve to be part of his final World Cup squad.

Ghana Current Form
Ghana arrive in Puebla needing a positive performance after a difficult few months. The Black Stars qualified for the World Cup in October 2025, but their results declined considerably afterwards. Playing in Mexico provides Aguirre's team with another clear advantage. El Tri have not lost an international on Mexican soil since a defeat against Chile in 2018, giving them an unbeaten home run of almost eight years going into tonight's game. Mexico's last defeat in Puebla itself dates even further back, to 1980.
The Estadio Cuauhtémoc also provides conditions visiting teams are not always accustomed to. Puebla sits at significant altitude, something Mexico can use as they attempt to press aggressively and maintain the tempo.
The venue is not one of the stadiums hosting matches at the 2026 World Cup, but tonight's crowd should still provide the type of home atmosphere Aguirre wants his players to experience before the tournament begins.
