Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest 2026: Head-to-Head, Team News & Injuries

Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest preview for May 4, 2026, with the last 10 meetings, team news, injuries, current form, and tactical analysis.

Chelsea host Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge on Monday, May 4, 2026, in a Bank Holiday Premier League fixture carrying important consequences for both teams. Chelsea are trying to rescue a difficult league campaign and build on the confidence of reaching the FA Cup final, while Forest still need points to make their Premier League survival secure.

The Blues enter Monday ninth with 48 points, having fallen away badly from the Champions League race after five consecutive Premier League defeats. Nottingham Forest sit 16th with 39 points, three above the relegation zone following the weekend's results, but Vítor Pereira's side arrive in outstanding form and with a 1-0 advantage over Aston Villa in their Europa League semi-final.

The contrast is therefore striking. Chelsea have endured one of their poorest league runs of the season but received a badly needed lift at Wembley, while Forest have gone nine matches unbeaten across all competitions and suddenly look like one of the Premier League's most difficult teams to beat.

Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest: Last 10 Matches

Chelsea hold the stronger record across the 10 competitive meetings immediately before May 4, 2026, although Forest have become a far more troublesome opponent since returning to the Premier League.

Across those 10 matches:

  • Chelsea wins: 6

  • Nottingham Forest wins: 1

  • Draws: 3

  • Chelsea goals: 20

  • Nottingham Forest goals: 8

  • Total goals: 28

  • Average goals per match: 2.8

The previous 10 competitive meetings were:

  • Nottingham Forest 0-3 Chelsea — October 18, 2025, Premier League

  • Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea — May 25, 2025, Premier League

  • Chelsea 1-1 Nottingham Forest — October 6, 2024, Premier League

  • Nottingham Forest 2-3 Chelsea — May 11, 2024, Premier League

  • Chelsea 0-1 Nottingham Forest — September 2, 2023, Premier League

  • Chelsea 2-2 Nottingham Forest — May 13, 2023, Premier League

  • Nottingham Forest 1-1 Chelsea — January 1, 2023, Premier League

  • Chelsea 2-0 Nottingham Forest — January 5, 2020, FA Cup

  • Chelsea 2-0 Nottingham Forest — January 5, 2019, FA Cup

  • Chelsea 5-1 Nottingham Forest — September 20, 2017, League Cup

Chelsea have therefore won six of the last 10 competitive encounters, with Forest's only victory coming at Stamford Bridge in September 2023. The Blues are also chasing a third consecutive league victory over Forest after winning both of their previous two meetings at the City Ground.

However, recent matches at Stamford Bridge tell a more complicated story. Since Forest returned to the Premier League in 2022, Chelsea have not won any of the three league meetings between the sides at Stamford Bridge, recording two draws and one defeat.

Chelsea Won the Reverse Fixture 3-0

The most recent meeting took place at the City Ground on October 18, 2025, when Chelsea secured an emphatic 3-0 victory.

After a goalless first half, Josh Acheampong headed Chelsea in front before Pedro Neto doubled the advantage from a free-kick. Reece James then completed the scoring late in the match. The defeat proved decisive for Forest manager Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed shortly afterwards.

That result provides Chelsea with confidence heading into the return fixture, but Forest are a significantly different side now. Pereira has transformed their defensive organisation, confidence and results since taking charge, making the October meeting a poor guide to their current level.

Forest Have Frustrated Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea's home record against Forest since the latter's Premier League return is surprisingly poor. The teams drew 2-2 at Stamford Bridge in May 2023 before Anthony Elanga scored the only goal in Forest's 1-0 victory there four months later. The October 2024 meeting then finished 1-1.

Chelsea's last home league victory over Nottingham Forest actually came in September 1998, when Gianfranco Zola and Gustavo Poyet scored in a 2-1 win.

That record should prevent the Blues from assuming home advantage alone will be enough. Forest have shown repeatedly that they are comfortable defending at Stamford Bridge and waiting for opportunities to attack on the counter.

Chelsea's Premier League Form Has Collapsed

Chelsea's recent league form is considerably worse than their position in the table might suggest. Liam Rosenior was dismissed on April 22 after the club lost five consecutive Premier League games without scoring, their worst such scoring drought since 1912.

Calum McFarlane returned as interim head coach for the remainder of the season and immediately produced a much-needed response in the FA Cup. Chelsea defeated Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley on April 26 to reach the final, where Manchester City await on May 16.

The Wembley result improved the atmosphere around the squad, but Chelsea's league problems remain unresolved. They have 48 points and their hopes of finishing in the top five have become extremely remote, leaving McFarlane focused on improving performances and trying to build momentum before the FA Cup final.

That makes the Forest match important even if Champions League qualification is now unlikely. Chelsea need to prove that the victory over Leeds represented the beginning of a recovery rather than an isolated cup performance.

João Pedro Remains Chelsea's Main Goal Threat

One of Chelsea's strongest individual performers this season has been João Pedro. The Brazilian enters the Forest game with 14 Premier League goals and five assists, giving him 19 direct goal involvements in his first league campaign for Chelsea.

His ability to operate as a centre-forward while dropping into deeper positions gives Chelsea more flexibility against Forest's compact defensive structure. If Pereira asks his centre-backs to remain narrow, João Pedro can move away from the penalty area and create room for Cole Palmer or Pedro Neto to attack.

Forest must also be careful not to allow him too much space between midfield and defence. Chelsea have struggled badly for league goals recently, but João Pedro remains capable of turning a small opening into a high-quality chance.

Cole Palmer's Creativity Will Be Important

Cole Palmer has not enjoyed the same extraordinary numbers as in some of his previous campaigns, but he remains one of Chelsea's most technically gifted attackers.

Forest are likely to protect central areas and force the home side to circulate possession around their defensive block. In that type of match, Palmer's ability to receive in tight spaces, play through balls and combine around the edge of the penalty area could become essential.

Chelsea cannot afford to simply dominate possession without purpose. Their five-match league scoring drought demonstrated how sterile their attacking play had become, so McFarlane needs Palmer, Enzo Fernández and João Pedro to move the ball more quickly when spaces appear.

Pedro Neto Can Stretch Forest's Defence

Pedro Neto provides another important element because of his pace and direct running. The Portuguese winger has five Premier League goals and four assists this season and also scored in the 3-0 victory at the City Ground in October.

Forest's defensive system becomes much easier to maintain if Chelsea play exclusively through central areas. Neto's ability to attack full-backs, reach the byline and force defenders to move towards the touchline can create gaps elsewhere.

With Callum Hudson-Odoi unavailable for Forest and several visiting defenders carrying injuries, Chelsea should try to increase the tempo in wide areas rather than allowing Pereira's team to remain comfortable inside a narrow block.

Chelsea Injury News

Chelsea remain without Estêvão Willian, who is sidelined with a thigh injury, while Jamie Gittens is also unavailable because of a thigh problem. Goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen has been dealing with a groin issue, and Mykhailo Mudryk remains unavailable.

There is more positive news involving Reece James and Levi Colwill. Both players returned to team training before the Forest match, with Colwill also gaining minutes for Chelsea's Under-21 side as part of his recovery from the knee injury that has kept him out for most of the campaign.

McFarlane made clear that neither defender would be rushed back, but both were considered possible squad options for Monday. Their return would be especially encouraging ahead of the FA Cup final, even if this game comes too early for either to start.

Nottingham Forest Arrive Nine Games Unbeaten

Forest's recent form could hardly be more different from Chelsea's. Pereira's side enter Stamford Bridge unbeaten in nine matches across all competitions, with their latest result a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Chris Wood scored the decisive penalty in the second half at the City Ground, giving Forest a narrow advantage before the return leg at Villa Park on May 7. The European run has come alongside a major improvement in the Premier League, where Forest are unbeaten in six games.

Their domestic sequence includes a 4-1 victory over Burnley and an emphatic 5-0 away win at Sunderland, one of their best performances of the season. Forest have won three of their last four Premier League games and collected enough points to move out of the immediate relegation positions.

Survival is not mathematically secured, though. After Tottenham's victory at Aston Villa and West Ham's defeat at Brentford over the weekend, Forest remain only three points above the relegation zone.

Morgan Gibbs-White Is Forest's Key Player

Morgan Gibbs-White has been central to Forest's revival. He enters the Chelsea match with 13 Premier League goals, making him their leading league scorer, while his overall total stands at 16 goals across all competitions.

His recent form has been exceptional. Gibbs-White has seven goals in his previous seven Premier League appearances, including a hat-trick in Forest's 4-1 comeback victory over Burnley.

Against Chelsea, he will likely spend significant periods without the ball, but that may suit him. Gibbs-White is particularly dangerous when Forest recover possession, and he can carry it forward before the opposition midfield has reorganised.

Chelsea's Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández therefore need to maintain good positioning behind the ball. Allowing Gibbs-White to turn and run at the defence would give Forest exactly the type of transition opportunity they want.

Chris Wood and Igor Jesus Give Pereira Options

Pereira has flexibility at centre-forward. Chris Wood returned from a lengthy injury absence and scored the winner against Aston Villa from the penalty spot, while Igor Jesus has contributed five Premier League goals and four assists.

Forest can use the physical presence of Wood when they need a direct target or choose Igor Jesus for greater movement and mobility. Pereira has also shown a willingness to use both in a 4-4-2, which allows Forest to bypass midfield pressure and compete aggressively for second balls.

That approach could be useful at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are likely to have more possession, but Forest do not need to dominate the ball to create chances if their forwards can hold up possession and bring Gibbs-White and the wide players into the attack.

Forest Have Significant Injury Problems

The biggest concern for Forest is the physical condition of their squad after a demanding European schedule. Murillo, Jair Cunha, Dan Ndoye and Ibrahim Sangaré all missed the Europa League victory over Aston Villa and remain concerns ahead of the Chelsea game.

Murillo has been dealing with a muscular problem, while Jair suffered a shoulder injury against Sunderland. Sangaré and Ndoye have also been managing fitness issues.

Callum Hudson-Odoi will not face his former club after undergoing surgery for a muscular injury, while Nicolò Savona, Willy Boly and goalkeeper John Victor are also unavailable.

Those injuries, combined with the Europa League second leg only three days after the Chelsea match, could encourage Pereira to rotate. The difficulty is that Forest cannot completely prioritise Europe while their Premier League status remains unsecured.

Tactical Matchup: Chelsea Possession vs Forest Transitions

The likely tactical pattern is clear. Chelsea should dominate possession at Stamford Bridge, while Forest are comfortable allowing opponents to have the ball before attacking quickly when possession changes hands.

McFarlane's team needs to move the ball with greater purpose than they have during their recent Premier League defeats. Forest's compact defensive shape will be comfortable against slow circulation, so Chelsea need Palmer, Neto and João Pedro to interchange positions and force defenders to make decisions.

Forest, meanwhile, will look to make the match uncomfortable. Pereira's side can defend in a compact 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 before using Gibbs-White as the connection between defence and attack.

Chelsea's biggest danger may come from committing too many players forward. If their full-backs advance simultaneously and possession is lost in midfield, Forest have enough pace and physical strength to attack the exposed spaces quickly.

Set Pieces Could Be Important

Dead-ball situations are another area Chelsea need to manage carefully. Forest have scored four of their seven Premier League goals against Chelsea since returning to the top flight from set pieces, which highlights how effective they have been at using set-piece situations in this fixture.

Chelsea have had their own problems defending corners, conceding 11 Premier League goals from them this season, their joint-highest total in a single campaign. At the other end, however, the Blues have scored 18 goals from corners across all competitions, meaning set pieces could offer opportunities for both teams.

Nikola Milenković, Wood and Forest's other aerial threats will therefore require close attention, while Chelsea can respond with Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo and João Pedro when they win corners of their own.

Forest's European Schedule Could Influence the Match

Pereira faces one of the most difficult selection decisions of Forest's season. His team played Aston Villa on Thursday, travelled to Stamford Bridge on Monday and then faces Villa again on Thursday with a place in the Europa League final at stake.

Some rotation therefore appears likely, especially given the injury situation. Chelsea, by comparison, have had a full week to recover from their FA Cup semi-final against Leeds.

That physical advantage could become increasingly important during the second half. If Forest begin to tire, Chelsea should have the deeper attacking bench and greater ability to increase the tempo.

However, Forest's recent results suggest their confidence and organisation can compensate for fatigue. Nine matches without defeat, including major European and league victories, represent a considerable change from the team that lost 3-0 to Chelsea in October.

Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest: Who Has the Advantage?

Chelsea enter as slight favourites because of home advantage, squad depth and the extra recovery time available before the match. Their 3-0 victory at the City Ground earlier this season also demonstrates that they possess the quality to hurt Forest when their attacking combinations work.

The broader head-to-head record favours Chelsea as well. They have won six of the previous 10 competitive meetings, while Forest have managed only one victory. Yet that record should not disguise how difficult this particular fixture has become at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea have failed to beat Forest in three Premier League attempts since the visitors returned to the top flight.

Current form strongly favours Forest. Pereira's side are nine games unbeaten in all competitions and six unbeaten in the Premier League, while Chelsea have lost five consecutive league matches without scoring. The Blues' FA Cup victory over Leeds offers hope that McFarlane can change the mood, but Monday represents the first opportunity to prove that improvement can carry over into the league.

Forest's injury problems and European commitments make their task more difficult, particularly with the decisive Aston Villa second leg approaching. Chelsea should therefore expect to control possession and territory, but they cannot afford the slow and predictable attacking play that contributed to their recent league decline.

For Chelsea, victory would finally end their losing sequence, move them back towards the European places and provide another confidence boost before the FA Cup final. For Nottingham Forest, three points would take them considerably closer to Premier League safety while extending an excellent run under Pereira.

The circumstances make this a far more balanced contest than the teams' historical record suggests. Chelsea have greater individual quality and fresher legs, but Forest arrive with the stronger form, clearer momentum and a tactical approach that has already caused the Blues problems at Stamford Bridge in recent seasons.
