Türkiye Recent Form

Türkiye's World Cup was much more disappointing. Their last five matches before this Nations League window were:

Türkiye returned to the World Cup for the first time since 2002 but finished bottom of Group D. They lost their opening two matches against Australia and Paraguay, which meant their 3-2 victory over co-hosts United States was not enough to keep them in the tournament.

For Montella, the Nations League is therefore an opportunity to show that the World Cup was a setback rather than the beginning of a decline.

Belgium Team News

Van Bommel has selected a 28-player squad for his first international window. Kevin De Bruyne, Youri Tielemans, Romelu Lukaku, Charles De Ketelaere, Loïs Openda and Leandro Trossard provide an experienced core.

Romeo Lavia returns to the squad, while Malick Fofana, Mika Godts, Diego Moreira and Matias Fernandez-Pardo give Belgium younger attacking options. There are also some important absences.

Thibaut Courtois is sitting out the Nations League campaign after an agreement with Van Bommel. Jérémy Doku and Amadou Onana are unavailable through injury, while Axel Witsel has retired from international football.

The absence of Doku is particularly relevant tactically because Belgium loses one of their best one-on-one dribblers. Van Bommel still has plenty of attacking options, but he may need to find different ways to create width and disrupt compact defensive blocks.

Türkiye Team News

Montella has selected a 29-player squad for the Nations League window. Arda Güler, Kerem Aktürkoğlu, Orkun Kökçü, Ferdi Kadıoğlu, Merih Demiral, Barış Alper Yılmaz, Can Uzun and Yunus Akgün are among the established options.

There are also several less experienced players, including Bartuğ Elmaz, Melih Kabasakal, Adil Demirbağ and İlhan Fakılı. Türkiye will, however, be without two important players. Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Kenan Yıldız are both unavailable because of injury.

Çalhanoğlu's absence is especially important because of his passing range, set-piece quality, and ability to control the tempo from midfield. That places greater creative responsibility on players such as Arda Güler and Orkun Kökçü.

Key Players

Kevin De Bruyne

De Bruyne remains Belgium's most important creative player. His ability to play early passes into attacking areas can change games quickly, particularly when opponents leave space between midfield and defence. Türkiye cannot allow him to receive possession facing forward too often.

Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku gives Belgium a powerful central reference. His strength can occupy centre-backs, but his movement around the penalty area is equally important. Türkiye will need to control the service into him rather than simply focusing on physical duels after the ball arrives.

Arda Güler

With Çalhanoğlu and Yıldız unavailable, Arda's influence becomes even more important. He can create from central areas or the right half-space, combine around the penalty area, and threaten from distance.

Belgium need to prevent him from finding pockets of space between their midfield and defensive lines.

Kerem Aktürkoğlu

Kerem provides direct running and a threat in behind. If Belgium commit players forward, his speed could make him particularly dangerous during transitions.

Tactical Battle

Belgium should be comfortable having possession. De Bruyne, Tielemans and Lavia give Van Bommel players capable of moving the ball through midfield, while Lukaku, Openda, De Ketelaere and Trossard provide different attacking options.

Their challenge may be creating enough penetration without Doku. Türkiye can make the game difficult by remaining compact and then attacking quickly when possession changes hands.

Without Çalhanoğlu, though, progressing the ball cleanly through midfield could become more difficult. That may increase the importance of Orkun Kökçü and Arda Güler. If those players can escape Belgium's pressure and release Türkiye's wide attackers quickly, the visitors can create dangerous situations.

Where the Match Could Be Decided

Belgium controlling Arda Güler

Arda could become Türkiye's main creative reference in the absence of Çalhanoğlu and Yıldız. Belgium need to prevent him from receiving comfortably between the lines. If he repeatedly turns towards goal, Türkiye's attackers can quickly become involved.

Türkiye defending Lukaku

Lukaku can create problems even without scoring. If Türkiye's centre-backs become too focused on him, spaces can open for De Bruyne, Trossard, De Ketelaere or Belgium's other attackers. The defensive line needs to deal with Lukaku without losing its overall shape.

Belgium's width without Doku

Doku normally provides direct dribbling and the ability to beat a defender without needing an overload. Without him, Belgium may rely more on combinations, overlapping defenders and younger wide attackers.

Türkiye can make Belgium's possession less dangerous if they force them to circulate the ball without penetrating.

Midfield transitions

Both teams have players who can punish turnovers. Belgium need protection behind their midfield when they attack, while Türkiye cannot afford careless possession losses around De Bruyne and Tielemans.

What the H2H Record Tells Me

Very little separates the countries historically. Three wins each and five draws from 11 meetings is about as balanced as a head-to-head record can be. However, their last meeting was in 2011.

That means current squad quality and tactical structure matter much more than the historical numbers. Belgium come into this Nations League cycle after reaching the World Cup quarter-finals.

Türkiye exited in the group stage and are also missing two influential players, Çalhanoğlu and Yıldız. Those are much more useful indicators than results from 15 or 20 years ago.

Final View

I see this as a useful test of where both teams stand after very different World Cup campaigns. Belgium showed during the knockout rounds that they can still compete with strong opposition, and Van Bommel inherits experienced players such as De Bruyne, Tielemans and Lukaku alongside a younger group.

Türkiye have plenty of technical ability themselves, but the absences of Çalhanoğlu and Yıldız remove two important players from Montella's attacking structure. For me, the midfield battle is central.

If Belgium can control possession and consistently find De Bruyne between Türkiye's lines, they should create opportunities for Lukaku and the other forwards. Türkiye's best route may be to stay compact, force turnovers, and attack quickly through Arda, Kerem, and their other runners.

The old H2H record suggests a very balanced rivalry, but this is effectively a new matchup after 15 years without a meeting. With France and Italy also in Group A1, points against each other could become particularly valuable for Belgium and Türkiye in the race for the Nations League quarter-finals.
