Lazio and Inter Milan meet at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome tonight, 13 May 2026, with the Coppa Italia trophy on the line. For newly crowned Serie A champions Inter, the final represents an opportunity to complete a domestic double in Cristian Chivu's first full season in charge. For Lazio, it offers the chance to transform an inconsistent campaign by winning their first major trophy since lifting the Coppa Italia in 2019.
Inter arrive in Rome as Italy's dominant team this season. The Nerazzurri secured their 21st Serie A championship on 3 May with a 2-0 victory over Parma and followed that achievement by beating Lazio 3-0 at the Olimpico just four days before tonight's final.
Lazio, meanwhile, enter the final ninth of Serie A with 51 points after 36 matches. Their league campaign has fallen short of expectations, making the Coppa Italia increasingly important as the season has progressed. Maurizio Sarri's side have already eliminated AC Milan, Bologna and Atalanta to get this far, proving they have been a much more dangerous proposition in knockout football.
Lazio vs Inter Milan Head-to-Head Summary
Recent meetings between Lazio and Inter have been heavily dominated by the Nerazzurri. Inter are unbeaten in the last nine competitive matches between the clubs, recording seven victories and two draws during that period. Lazio's most recent win over Inter came at this same stadium on 26 August 2022, when goals from Felipe Anderson, Luis Alberto and Pedro produced a 3-1 Serie A victory.
Across the last 10 competitive meetings before tonight's final, the record stands at:
Inter Milan wins: 7
Lazio wins: 1
Draws: 2
Inter Milan goals: 25
Lazio goals: 7
Total goals: 32
Average goals per match: 3.2
The numbers demonstrate just how difficult Lazio have found this matchup. Inter have also recorded six clean sheets during their current nine-match unbeaten run against the Biancocelesti.

That run includes some particularly painful results for Lazio, most notably Inter's 6-0 victory at the Olimpico in December 2024 and Saturday's 3-0 win at the same venue. Inter also eliminated Lazio from last season's Coppa Italia, winning 2-0 at San Siro in the quarter-finals through goals from Marko Arnautovic and Hakan Çalhanoğlu.
Most Recent Match: Lazio 0-3 Inter Milan
There could hardly have been a more relevant dress rehearsal for tonight's final. Lazio and Inter met in Serie A at the Olimpico on 9 May, only four days before returning to the same stadium to decide the Coppa Italia. Inter produced a commanding 3-0 victory despite already having the league title secured.
Lautaro Martínez opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Marcus Thuram flicked on a long throw. It was Lautaro's 17th Serie A goal of the campaign and marked an impressive return to the starting lineup following an injury layoff. Petar Sučić doubled Inter's advantage before half-time with an excellent first-time finish from the edge of the area.
Lazio's chances of mounting a comeback became even smaller when Alessio Romagnoli was sent off shortly before the hour mark following a dangerous challenge on Ange-Yoan Bonny. Henrikh Mkhitaryan completed the scoring in the 75th minute as Inter comfortably controlled the closing stages.
The result gives Inter a clear psychological advantage, but Chivu has been careful not to assume that tonight will follow the same pattern. Speaking on 12 May, the Inter coach stressed that a final is a completely different match and warned that Lazio will have additional motivation after Saturday's defeat.

Lazio's Road to the Coppa Italia Final
Although Lazio's Serie A campaign has been disappointing, their journey through the Coppa Italia has been impressive. Sarri's side entered at the Round of 16 and immediately faced AC Milan at the Olimpico. Mattia Zaccagni scored the only goal as Lazio won 1-0 and progressed to the quarter-finals.
Their next challenge was defending Coppa Italia champions Bologna. The match finished 1-1 after regular time before Lazio won the penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals. Atalanta then provided an even tougher test. The first leg at the Olimpico finished 2-2, leaving everything open before the return match in Bergamo.
Romagnoli gave Lazio an 84th-minute lead in the second leg, only for Mario Pasalic to equalise two minutes later. After extra time failed to separate the sides, goalkeeper Edoardo Motta became Lazio's hero by saving four penalties. Kenneth Taylor and Gustav Isaksen converted Lazio's successful attempts as they won the shootout 2-1.
Tonight will therefore be Lazio's 11th Coppa Italia final. They have won seven of their previous 10, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2009, 2013 and 2019.
Inter Milan's Road to the Coppa Italia Final
Inter began their cup campaign with a dominant 5-1 victory over Venezia in the Round of 16 before beating Torino 2-1 in the quarter-finals. The semi-final against Como proved much more difficult. After a goalless first leg, Inter fell 2-0 behind at San Siro in the return fixture and appeared to be heading out of the competition.
Çalhanoğlu changed the game dramatically. He pulled one back in the 69th minute before heading home the equaliser in the 86th. Sučić then completed the comeback three minutes later, sending Inter into the final with a 3-2 victory.
Inter are appearing in their 16th Coppa Italia final and have already won the competition nine times, most recently in 2023 against Fiorentina. A victory tonight would deliver their 10th Coppa Italia and complete the league-and-cup double.

Current Form
1. Inter Milan
Inter enter the final in excellent form. Their recent results include a 3-0 victory over Lazio, a 2-0 win against Parma that secured the Scudetto, a 2-2 draw away to Torino, a dramatic 3-2 Coppa Italia comeback against Como and a 3-0 league victory over Cagliari. After beating Lazio, Inter moved to 85 points from 36 Serie A matches.
They have also scored 85 league goals, illustrating how productive Chivu's side has been in attack. Their consistency throughout the campaign has allowed them to secure the championship with matches to spare. Lautaro remains central to everything they do. His goal against Lazio took him to 17 in Serie A, putting him four clear of teammate Marcus Thuram in the scoring race at that stage.
2. Lazio
Lazio's recent results have been less consistent, although the 3-0 defeat to Inter came during what had otherwise been one of their better spells of the season. Before Saturday's loss, Lazio had beaten Cremonese 2-1, drawn 3-3 with Udinese and won 2-0 away to Napoli. They also eliminated Atalanta on penalties during that sequence.
The concern is their scoring output. Lazio have regularly struggled to turn possession into enough goals, while Inter have produced more than twice as many league goals this season. That difference in attacking efficiency could become decisive if Lazio concede first tonight.
Tactical Matchup and Style of Play
1. Lazio
Sarri is expected to remain with the 4-3-3 structure that has defined much of his coaching career, but the approach must be considerably better than it was during Saturday's defeat. Mattia Zaccagni and Gustav Isaksen provide the threat from wide areas, while Tijjani Noslin offers a more mobile option through the middle. Kenneth Taylor has also become an important midfielder since arriving during the season.
Lazio's main challenge will be playing through Inter's pressure without leaving themselves exposed when possession is lost. Sarri made clear before the match that mentality will be just as important as tactics. He admitted Lazio had failed to press or compete properly during Saturday's defeat and said that if the same attitude returned, tactical adjustments would make little difference.
2. Inter Milan
Inter are expected to continue with Chivu's familiar 3-5-2, using the width of Federico Dimarco and Denzel Dumfries while creating central overloads through Nicolò Barella, Piotr Zieliński and either Sučić or Mkhitaryan. The system has retained many of Inter's established strengths while becoming increasingly aggressive under Chivu.
Set pieces are another major advantage. Inter had scored 27 Serie A goals from set-piece situations by the time of the final, 19 more than Lazio. Lautaro and Thuram provide the finishing power up front. Lautaro has scored eight career goals against Lazio in all competitions, making the Biancocelesti one of his favourite opponents.
Lazio Team Injuries and Suspensions
One important correction from the original version concerns Alessio Romagnoli. Although the defender was sent off against Inter on Saturday, his suspension applies to Serie A rather than tonight's Coppa Italia final. He remained available and was included in Lazio's predicted starting lineups ahead of the game.
The major suspension affecting Lazio is actually on the touchline. Maurizio Sarri is suspended for the Coppa Italia final, meaning Lazio will have to face Inter without their head coach directing the team from the technical area.
Danilo Cataldi is also a fitness concern. He returned to training only on 12 May after being unable to train properly for around a month. Sarri confirmed that Cataldi was medically improving but made clear that his match fitness remained limited.
Pedro is another player carrying a problem. The experienced forward had been dealing with bruising and only completed part of Lazio's final training session. He was expected to be available, but probably only for a limited role.
Inter Milan Team Injuries and News
Inter approach the final in relatively good condition. Lautaro is available after returning from his recent injury and immediately scoring against Lazio on Saturday. The Argentine acknowledged on the eve of the final that calf and subsequent injury problems had disrupted part of his season, but he is now back and focused on helping Inter win another trophy.
Marcus Thuram created some concern after experiencing discomfort before the final, but Chivu confirmed on 12 May that the French forward was feeling better and had trained with the squad. His condition was due to be assessed again before kickoff. Hakan Çalhanoğlu is the most notable expected absentee, leaving Zieliński as the leading candidate for the central playmaking role.
Players to Watch
Lautaro Martínez is the obvious danger for Inter. He returned from injury by scoring against Lazio four days ago and enters the final as Serie A's leading scorer with 17 goals. He also has previous experience delivering on this stage, having scored twice in Inter's 2023 Coppa Italia final victory over Fiorentina.
For Lazio, Mattia Zaccagni will carry much of the creative responsibility. His ability to receive the ball on the left, move inside and either create or shoot could be crucial if Lazio spend long periods defending.
Goalkeeper Edoardo Motta also deserves attention after his extraordinary semi-final performance against Atalanta. Four saves in the penalty shootout carried Lazio into this final, and another strong performance may be necessary against Inter's attack.
Lazio vs Inter Milan: Who is the Favourite to Win?
Inter deserve to enter the Coppa Italia final as clear favourites. They have already won Serie A, are unbeaten in nine consecutive matches against Lazio and have won seven of those meetings. Most significantly, they returned to this exact stadium only four days ago and left with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
However, cup finals do not always follow league form. Lazio have already eliminated Milan, Bologna and Atalanta and have seven Coppa Italia trophies in their history. They also defeated Inter the only previous time these two clubs met in a Coppa Italia final, winning the two-legged 2000 final 2-1 on aggregate.
Lazio should also show far greater intensity than they managed on Saturday. Their chances will depend on staying compact, avoiding another early goal and making the most of counterattacks and set pieces.
Nevertheless, Inter have more attacking options, a stronger midfield, better recent form and considerably more confidence. If Chivu's side reproduces anything close to the level they showed in Saturday's league meeting, Lazio will find it difficult to stop them completing the domestic double.
